"Malcolm McLaren, the former manager of the Sex Pistols and impresario, has died. He was 64.

McLaren had had cancer for some time. His condition recently deteriorated rapidly and he died this morning in New York. His body is expected to be brought home to be buried in Highgate cemetery, north London.

Born in North London, McLaren was best known as the manager of the iconic punk band The Sex Pistols. After attending and dropping out of several art colleges in 1971 he opened a clothes shop on the King’s Road , Let It Rock, with Vivienne Westwood."

Shallow in 7 parts - Collection of Musical Paintings

Malcolm McLaren, the former Sex Pistols manager and everything else extraordinaire, will have his artwork played on MTV's 44 1/2 screen starting June 26th through July 31st in New York's Time Square.  The piece titled, Shallow, is composed of slow-motion videos of people about to have sex or at the least the hint of it (it doesn't show the actual act of it).  McLaren looped together various clips and set to a soundtrack that can be heard via cell phone.  And it proves that McLaren is a man after my own heart, because the songs included are Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together."  

Shallow recently premiered at Switzerland's Art Basel.  The theme of this piece are based on the kind of experiences McLaren had when he first encountered pop culture.  But, what does he think will happen when it goes live before the young TRL crowd? "I don't know, but I guess once upon a time people had a very different idea of 42nd Street."

Malcolm McLaren is music, art, punk, philosophy and fashion. He's everything to me. Last week he guest blogged for the New York Times jotting down some insights on the 39th Annual Art Basel show in Switzerland where he also unveiled "Shallow (1-21)" a series of "Musical Paintings" as part of special curated exhibit, Art Basel Projects.  Read his blog posts here.
